Sharpening a Gouge

There are a number of ways to sharpen a gouge. This is a method I have been using for sometime with greater success. Its a cheap method that does not require the use of expensive sharpening stones and slip stones but still produces a very good sharp edge. w: www.davidirelandstrings.com/

Maybe I am strange but I like volins with very, very close growth rings. Everyone says that it does not make a difference but I don't see how it would not. The growth rings are denser than the surrounding wood. I also find that the close ring violins are better looking.
Thank you Whats the Name of your carving tools (Brand)
I am wondering how the old masters in the 18th century measured the temputure up to 234C.
Awesome!
Very nice ! I cant believe this video showed up the day I was studying all the amazing materials my violin making teachers familly gave me after he passed . I found some old brown bottles , and linseed oil and poppyseed oil and dark linseed and some patroleum smelling stuff . The turpinetine that you add at the end is something I will like to have understood more how much and how and stuff . and I was wondering what you meant by the violin was prepared with a Ground ? before its first coat ?
Gosh, I have the same guitar, and need to do this and a refret. It almost seems like it would be easier to just remove the fingerboard, and put a full length shim on, and then refret and dress?
Nice to see the finger bandage. I have those sometimes too!
What cooker brand? I couldn't found such adjustable cooker
Very interesting. Of course resins were only used because poly hadn't been discovered. U get the exactly the same result with water based dyes and couple of coats of very thin poly. I know, blasphemus but true.
All that and we don’t get to hear it!?
Hello, what products should I use while polishing, can you help me?
that smoke coming out is the oil becoming closer to a solid.
MOst unlabeled violins that I open up look like they were carved with a hatchet by a one armed man.
bagus sekali ! Matur suksma
Hello David! Thank you for mentioning Keith Hill as the source for your varnish recipe! It's higly interesting to read what Mr Hill has found out. Do you know any violin maker who is crafting the described area tuning? As for the varnish making I think that the wood ash scheme is the only key to get a perfect varnish the easy way and without unwanted chemistry. I did it slightly different using fir resin and it worked out great. Cheers
Thank u for u presentation,I like it....
shouldn't the bass bar more close towards the eye opening?
👏
enjoy your nerve damage
I hate to say anything negative but. It wasn’t cleaned completely, waxed and polished before reinstalling all the hardware.
I wish you would have played it.
It would help if you explained what you did and why you did it. Your yellow writing is too difficult to read and it dorsn't stay on the screen long enough to read. This could have been a much better video.
the varnish is waterproof ?
Stradivari isn't german
me interesa mucho y más aprender muy interesante el tallado muy especial
Estaermoso
Is it even worth fixing?
This varnish looks good but I think I did something wrong the results after many coats look good but the cured article with many coats is very brittle and flakey . What did I do wrong ? Can I adjust the mixture or do I have to start from scratch ?
I followed this recipe to make varnish for the viola that I am currently making . It worked very well to produce a thick Amber varnish . Thank you .
A typically factory-produced production line fiddle of the lowest order!
Loved this video, but would have liked to hear the violin when all done!
please use a font for subtitles that has an outline (I know this video is quite old)
i want to see a violin with black carbon varnish, never seen it before.
Sorry but it "needs" is a garbage can.
7:35 what is meant by "lime"???
Elsonidocomoes
perhaps a silly question: what would happen if, prior to drilling depth holes, one outlined where the bass bar goes and then drilled holes around it, thereby carving out the top plate with the bass bar as one?
Never knew people glued soundposts!
No problem getting the chisels sharp, but I can't seem to get a sharp edge on my violin makers' knives. I don't know if I'm using the wrong angle or method of travel (both forward and back and circular motion) on the stone, but I just get a fair amount of sharpness. I really need a razor's edge if I can get it. I thought the steel was possibly inferior but blades are made in Germany and seem strong enough. If you could do a video on sharpening violin makers knives by hand without a jig or special wheels perhaps, I would see what I'm doing wrong. Thanks.

in my opinion that F holes are a bit too high up should be lower but it's not my violin
no it's a violin F holes I was looking upside down
is that a hardanger f holes ?
WHAT YEAR IS THIS VIOLIN ? THANKS !
As per usual... Step one - apply some varnish. Step two - throw the violin in the trash
Do you know how to make varnish, Vanish? ...Take away the "r". ...Kee-hee!, Hee-hee!, Hee-heeeeeee! :)

Yellow was a poor choice for text font. Much of it is very hard to read. Next time choose a contrasting color.
Wow. Lots of hateful comments. Easy to sit back and judge. I, for one, appreciate the work and the video. It takes courage to put yourself out there. Varnishing is an art form unto itself. It maybe more difficult than the woodworking for many builders. Thanks for posting my friend.
This was a good video, except you may have well, showed putting in the sound post. Because after all that tedious work, it won't sound good, if the sound post isn't good.
